Delicious Mexican Birria Tacos made with tender beef and rich broth, perfect for gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs beef (like chuck roast or brisket)
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 3 dried guajillo chiles, stemmed and seeded
  • 2 dried ancho chiles, stemmed and seeded
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • Salt to taste
  • Corn tortillas
  • Chopped cilantro and diced onion (for serving)
  • Lime wedges (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Toast the dried chiles in a skillet over medium heat until fragrant, about 2 minutes.
  2. Soak the toasted chiles in hot water for about 15 minutes until softened.
  3. Blend the soaked chiles, beef broth, onion, garlic, cumin, oregano, black pepper, cinnamon, and salt until smooth.
  4. Place the beef in a slow cooker and pour the sauce over it.
  5. Cook on low for 8 hours or until the beef is tender and shreds easily.
  6. Shred the beef with two forks once cooked.
  7. Warm the corn tortillas and fill them with the shredded beef.
  8. Serve with chopped cilantro, diced onion, and lime wedges.

Notes

Toast the chiles to enhance their flavor. Add heat with extra chiles or jalapeƱos if desired.
